Rosehill College Student Wins Prestigious World Vision Award
We are thrilled to share that our very own head student, Oscar Hayhow, has been named the recipient of the World Vision Te Manawa Big-Hearted Award. This recognition comes after Oscar’s outstanding effort in this year’s 40-Hour Challenge, where he completed over 40 acts of kindness — so many, he even lost count!
Oscar’s acts of kindness ranged from preparing breakfast for his mum to buying snacks for his friends, but it was cleaning up litter around graves at local cemeteries that brought him the most fulfilment.
Oscar was nominated by Deputy Principal Melissa Powell and World Vision’s Youth Ambassador, Jade Nomani. Nomani praised Oscar’s dedication, saying, “He embodies everything this award stands for. He was always out there during morning tea and lunch with a clipboard, getting people signed up and donating. His commitment to the cause and his enthusiasm for making a difference is truly inspiring.”
Melissa Powell echoed this sentiment, noting, “Oscar leads with heart. He doesn’t just tell people what to do – he shows them through his actions. His genuine care for others and his warmth leave a lasting impact on those around him. He’s leaving behind a legacy of kindness and community spirit that will resonate long after his time here at Rosehill.”
Oscar’s involvement with the 40-Hour Challenge has been years in the making. Inspired after attending a youth conference where he heard from World Vision’s Youth Ambassadors, he knew he wanted to make a difference. “Hearing their stories and learning how our efforts help communities in Timor-Leste was eye-opening. I realised just how fortunate we are here, and that I had the chance as a head student to inspire others to get involved and make a positive change.”
The World Vision 40-Hour Challenge provides young people with an opportunity to raise funds for vulnerable children around the world. Oscar’s advice for those thinking of taking part: “Every dollar counts. Whether big or small, explain the cause to your sponsors and get them on board. The more people that join, the bigger the impact we can make.”
Oscar encourages everyone – schools and individuals alike – to back the campaign and spread the word. “Together, we can make a real difference. There’s hope for the future, and it’s in our hands to create positive change.”
We are incredibly proud of Oscar for his hard work, leadership, and kind-hearted spirit. His recognition is well-deserved, and he continues to inspire us all with his dedication to making the world a better place.
