What is the SMART Assessment?
The SMART (Student Monitoring, Assessment and Reporting Tool) is a new online assessment. It is being introduced across schools in Aotearoa New Zealand from 2026.
SMART provides clear and consistent information about student progress in:
- Reading
- Writing
- Mathematics
It replaces the e-asTTle assessment and is aligned with the new curriculum.
Teachers use SMART results to track student progress and support conversations with students and whānau. Parents and caregivers will receive information about their child’s progress through our reporting processes.
Purpose of the Assessment
SMART is a learning check designed to:
- Help teachers understand what students already know
- Identify next learning steps
- Provide information to parents and caregivers
The focus is on progress and improvement over time, rather than a single result. Further testing is occuring in Term 4.
Assessments are completed online, students should bring their own device. Each assessment typically takes 30-45 minutes.
Questions may include:
- Multiple choice
- Short written responses
- Interactive tasks (for example, drag-and-drop tools)
Students complete the assessment in the Hall.
Parents can let Kaitiaki/Head of House know if a device needs to be booked. Please do so by 4th May.
